Renowned scientist Jayant Narlikar turns 80 on Thursday and to celebrate the occasion, Sahitya Akademi is bringing out a film on Narlikar, directed by film professor and film maker Anil Zankar, while Rajhans Prakashan has announced the release of two volumes of Narlikar’s complete works.

As part of Sahitya Akademi’s documentary project on writers of national repute, a film is in being made on Narlikar, scientist and writer, who won the Akademi award for his autobiography in 2013.

“The film is almost 90 per cent complete and has a mixture of interviews, discussions on some of Narlikar’s works, documents, and some dramatisation,” said Zankar.

The film tries to capture the writer in his different moods, the environments he used to work in, him talking about his works, and his art and achievements in retrospect.

Zankar will be making two versions of the film, 60 minutes and 27 minutes respectively. He said that making the documentary was not an easy task. “I should be ready with a cut for submission to the Akademi by end of August,” said Zankar.

Called the Vaidyanyanik Saraswat, the film showcases Narlikar in his element in his favourite campuses, institute of statistical, social and economic research (ISSER), and inter-university centre for astronomy and astrophysics (IUCCA). The project began in October, with research and the script being submitted in February to the Akademi. After their approval, the shoot began in May.

Dileep Majgaonkar, Rajhans Prakashan’s publisher, also announced the publication of two volumes of Jayant Narlikar’s works on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

“Narlikar has written extensively and the book has five science fiction novels and several short stories in Marathi. We plan to launch one volume of all his five novels together in December, followed by another in June next year. It will take time to source out his works as some of them are out of print. Narlikar also has some unpublished works that need to printed,” said Majgaonkar.
