To break the stereotype against female engineers working in the automobile industry, and promoting an influx of more women in the sector,Mercedes-Benz along withMaharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha (MKSSS) introduced the country’s first diploma course onautomotive mechatronics only for women. The luxury car-maker signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the collaboration on Monday.
As per the MoU, the advanced diploma in automotive mechatronics (ADAM) course will be conducted in MKSSS's Cummins College of Engineering for Women, Karvenagar from October. The MoU was signed in the presence of Santosh Iyer, vice-president, customer service and corporate affairs, Mercedes-Benz India; Smita Ghaisas, president, MKSSS, and PVS Shastry, secretary of MKSSS
Speaking about the collaboration, Shastry said,“Women empowerment has always been on the forefront for our college and this union is another step towards it. Women in mechanical and electrical engineering across the country is translated in the professional industries which have very less women employees. Through this we attempt to change that, especially for the automobile sector.”
Designed by the Mercedes-Benz Global Training Centre, a total of 20 students will be selected from all the applicants for the one-year ADAM course. These students will be selected based on their academic performance in the entrance exam. Depending on the performance, the intake can rise up to a maximum of 40 students.
The college officials informed that engineering degree or diploma students of Cummins college from different branches of engineering, mechanical , electronics, instrumentation and electrical will be eligible to apply for the course. After completion, students also have the opportunity to get absorbed in the company as certified mechanic technicians or service advisers.
“This course is to fulfil the requirement for superlative service in the automotive sector and promote gender diversity, especially automotive mechatronics for women. Recently we launched ‘She’s Mercedes’, a global initiative by Mercedes-Benz to recognise and celebrate the accomplishments of women in all walks of life. As the leaders in the luxury automobile industry, we want to break the stereotype associated with women in this sector and want more women to join the workforce.”
“Initiatives like these will provide appropriate platform to aspiring women to gear up for a bright career in the automotive industry. The percentage of women in the industry is low right now, but we believe it has immense potential to have more inclusion from women work force in the foreseeable future,” he added.
