A Chandigarh resident was booked after he called up an official of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) posing as Punjab jail minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
“Main Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa bol reha haan,” said the caller, who had called up Mandeep Singh, the sub-divisional officer (SDO) of the horticulture wing, on his phone.
Identifying himself as “minister”, the caller inquired from the SDO whether he had received a letter forwarded with regards to “work of his (Randhawa’s) elder brother who had a house in Sector 70, Mohali”.
When Mandeep asked for the identity of the caller, the latter replied, “Mainu ni pehchande?Main Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa bol raha hai..... Minister (Don’t you recognise me? I am minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa speaking)”.
Surprised, the SDO claimed in his response to the caller that he was sitting with Randhawa, and will make him speak to the minister. The caller then replied that he is in fact Randhawa, and even threatened “Tu mainu janda ni”.
Police said preliminary probe revealed that an attempt to encroach upon a green belt was being made in Sector 70, and the caller, posing as a minister, was trying to intimidate the SDO.
“We have booked one Paramjit Singh, the owner of the house in Sector 70. Further investigation is on. We will collect voice samples through the court,” said Ramandeep Singh, DSP, Mohali City.
A case under Sections 170 (personating a public servant), 420 (cheating), 419 (cheating by personation) and 511 (attempting to commit offences) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Phase 8 police station.
