Hit actor-director pairs in Bengali cinema and their upcoming films

Srijit Mukherji delivered his a hit with his debut film Autograph (2010) starring Prosenjit Chatterjee. They again created magic at the box office with Mishawr Rawhoshyo and Baishe Srabon. This Durga Puja, Mukherji again struck gold at the box office with Zulfiqar, an adaptation of Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra. This time too Prosenjit played the title role in the film. There are many filmmaker and actor duos, whose partnerships have proved to be profitable at the box office. Take the example of actress Mimi Chakraborty and director Birsa Dasgupta. Last Durga Puja, they teamed up for Sudhu Tomari Jonyo and this puja too, the actress-director duo came together for Gangster. This is the second time director Anjan Dutt has teamed up with actor Jisshu Sengupta for the Byomkesh Bakshi franchise and it again proved to be a box-office winner. When Kamaleswar Mukherjee roped in Dev to play the central character, Sankar, in Chander Pahar (2013), a film based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s acclaimed text, it raised quite a few eyebrows. Though the film got mixed reviews, it became a massive hit at the box office. Dev is working with Mukherjee again in his upcoming film Amazon Obhijaan, the second instalment in the Chander Pahar series. Mukherjee is all praise for the actor. “There’s been a sea-change in Dev since we first worked together. He has got into the skin of the character,” says the director.
Prosenjit Chatterjee-Srijit Mukherji
Director Srijit Mukherji first worked with Prosenjit in Autograph (2010). Since then, the director-actor duo has worked in films such as Baishe Srabon, Mishawr Rawhoshyo, Jaatiswar and Zulfiqar. The two will again collaborate for their upcoming Kakababu film, which will be an adaptation of celebrated Bengali author Sunil Gangopadhyay’s Paharchuray Aatonko. The team will start shooting next year.
Rituparna Sengupta- Agnidev Chatterjee
If Agnidev Chatterjee is making a film, trust him to approach actress Rituparna Sengupta for the lead role. The director-actor has teamed up for Bengali films such as Charuulata 2011, 3 Kanya, Mrs. Sen and A Political Murder. He even approached the actress to play the title role (which was later played by Mahima Chaudhury) in Dark Chocolate, a film on the Sheena Bora murder case. When Agnidev made his foray into Bollywood with Tere Ane Se, he chose Rituparna to play the lead role. In his next Bengali film, Gaheen Hriday and bilingual film, Jihaad, Rituparna plays the central character.
When choreographer Baba Yadav turned director he cast actor Jeet in the lead role. Baba’s directorial debut Boss with Jeet won hearts at the box office. The director-actor duo returned with Game and Badshah — The Don. The actor and director are now planning to collaborate for the sequel to Boss, which is said to be based on an original story.
Sabyasachi Chakraborty-Sandip Ray
Actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty, who played Feluda in Sandip Ray’s Bombaiyer Bombete, Kailashey Kelenkari, Tintorettor Jishu, Gorosthaney Sabdhan and Royal Bengal Rohosso, has again returned to the Feluda franchise with his new film. Titled Double Feluda, the film pays tribute to 50 years of Satyajit Ray’s iconic creation, Felu Mitter.
Raj Chakraborty last directed Dev in 2014 Durga Puja release Yoddha, which didn’t fare well at the box office. Their next film together, Chaamp, is already creating a lot of buzz as it introduces Dev’s rumoured girlfriend model Rukmini Maitra on the big screen. The film, which revolves round the life of a boxer, will go on the floors on November 25. Earlier, Dev has worked with Chakraborty in Challenge (2009), Le Chakka (2009) and Dui Prithibi (2010).
Abir Chatterjee-Kaushik Ganguly
Director Kaushik Ganguly and actor Abir Chatterjee worked together in the emotional drama Bastusaap in 2016. The duo is now working on their next, Bisarjan, which also stars Bangladeshi actor Jaya Ahsan.
Jisshu Sengupta and Parno Mittra -Anjan Dutt
Five years since Parno Mittra’s debut on the big screen with Dutt’s Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona, the director has teamed up with the actress in his new film, Bongs Again. This film also brings back the popular actor-director pairing of Jisshu Sengupta and Dutt. Jisshu is Dutt’s detective in the series on Byomkesh Bakshi. Soon, they will start shooting for their next Byomkesh film.
