Mersal, one of the most anticipated films this Diwali, is facing hurdles before its release. Initially, it was the Tamil Nadu Film Production Council (TFPC), headed by Vishal, who had stayed any new film from releasing in a move against the double entertainment tax. Now, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has announced that they haven’t certified the film as of now.
Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai tweeted an email conversation that requires the filmmakers to submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from ABWI. However, this has not been done as of October 12. While the directed cuts by the CBFC were done and submitted, the certification has been delayed due to the NOC.
Sreedhar tweeted, “#CBFC makes it clear that #Mersal has not been issued the censor certificate! On Monday a clearer picture would emerge.”
With just four days left and advance bookings going steady, it looks like the makers of the Atlee directorial are cutting it a little too close.
The strike against double entertainment tax ended on Friday when the TFPC gave a nod to the release of Mersal for Diwali. After two weeks of no new films releasing in the city, it looks like the Diwali weekend might be packed. We will have to wait to know how much the revision of ticket prices has affected the show business.
Mersal also stars Nithya Menon, Kajal Aggarwal and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in lead roles and the music for the film is composed by AR Rahman. Produced by Thenandal Studios, Mersal is going to be a grand Diwali release if certified on time.
