Will never make a film to promote my family: Kaushik Ganguly
The National award-winning filmmaker says he will only work with his family members if they are best suited as characters in the film he is making.
Filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly and actor-director Churni Ganguly’s son, Ujaan, is all set to make his acting debut with director Pavel’s upcoming film, Rosogolla. In the film industry, it is not uncommon for a filmmaker or actor to launch their children, but noted filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly refuses to be one of them.
The director is no stranger to working with a family member, having collaborated with his wife, actor-director Churni Ganguly in several films including Waarish (2004), Shunyo E Buke (2005), Arekti Premer Golpo (2010), Shabdo (2013) and the latest, Drishtikone. However, Kaushik says he never set out to make a film keeping a family member in mind as it does not do justice to the project.
“I can never design a film keeping in mind my family members. I have seen directors and producers making bad films just to cast their family. I feel it (the casting) should come naturally. You don’t have to go ahead and design a film like that. The moment I manoeuvre the plot to cast them, I will spoil the film.”
Kaushik says neither he nor his wife ever forced Ujaan, who is currently studying in Jadavpur University, to take up the same profession. In fact, they have even left it up to him to choose whatever he wants to purse - be it acting, direction, music or painting.
“He is a very good student. He is very talented, he sings well. I have seen him on stage acting and basis the understanding I have of actors, I feel that he will be a good actor. There are so many options, we have left it to him to choose what he wants to do. He has already done a film (Rosogolla), and I have heard that he has done a good job. I am waiting for the film to release on the big screen. I wish him all the best for his success,” adds the proud father.
