Aston Villa confirmed on Friday that Alex McLeish, the former boss of their city rivals Birmingham, would be their new manager despite a backlash from Villa fans.

McLeish makes the move across Birmingham just five days after resigning from his post at Birmingham, who he could not save from relegation from the English Premier League last season.

Villa have pressed ahead with the appointment of the 52-year-old Scot despite protests from supporters and a row with the Blues.
