Ferrer, ranked No 5, took charge after losing the opening set while struggling with his serve and completed the victory in 1 hour, 55 minutes.

The second-round match was originally scheduled for Wednesday night, but was postponed after rain forced the roof at Ariake Colosseum to be closed and play on the outer courts suspended.

Ferrer will next face Radek Stepanek after the Czech beat Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-1.

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal will play Milos Raonic of Canada later Thursday, while Andy Roddick plays America's Alex Bogomolov Jr.
