Research-Backed Choices
Every product we recommend is chosen through a combination of Primary Research and Secondary Research.

For the past seven years, I have tracked consumer tech through constant shifts in hardware, platforms, and the way people actually use devices. Covering everything from budget gear to flagship hardware, I focus on what readers need to know, not on buzzwords or launch cycle hype. My expertise spans gaming laptops and chairs, high-performance PCs, gaming monitors, printers, smartwatches, earphones, headphones, Bluetooth speakers, tablets, and more, with a particular emphasis on how these products hold up in daily use. Reviews, explainers, buying guides, and news pieces all share the same goal: giving readers enough detail to make confident decisions without wading through fluff. Away from deadlines, I spend a lot of time gaming and watching films and anime, which naturally filters back into the work. Performance, comfort, display quality, and sound are judged the way players and viewers experience them, not just by lab numbers, which keeps my coverage grounded in real scenarios rather than just benchmarks.

I have used earbuds from Apple, Sony and JBL, and one thing I have realised is that spending more does not always mean getting the right pair for your needs. AirPods make everyday listening effortless, Sony earbuds can reveal details in your favourite songs that you might have missed, while JBL focuses on punchy bass and features that make listening more fun. All three brands have something different to offer, which makes choosing between them less straightforward than it seems. So, if you are planning to buy a new pair during the Amazon sale, here is how I would compare them and which earbuds I think are worth your money.
AirPods vs Sony vs JBL: Which one should you buy?
| Factor | Apple AirPods | Sony earbuds | JBL earbuds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sound profile | Balanced and natural | Detailed and spacious | Bass heavy and energetic |
| ANC | Excellent, including open fit models | Strong on premium models | Strong on premium models |
| Customisation | Limited compared with rivals | Extensive app controls | Equaliser and feature controls |
| Design | Minimalist, often stemmed | Compact, stemless buds | Distinctive designs and smart case |
| Best suited for | iPhone users who want simplicity | Listeners who value sound detail | Bass lovers and feature seekers |
Apple AirPods: For those who want earbuds that just work
Apple AirPods are among the most popular wireless earbuds, and for good reason. If you want a pair that just works, especially with an iPhone, AirPods are an easy recommendation. You do not have to spend time setting things up, download a dedicated app or tweak multiple settings before you start listening. Pair them with your iPhone and you are good to go.
When it comes to sound quality, AirPods offer a balanced audio profile that works well across different genres. However, some listeners may find that the clarity and level of detail are not quite what they expect at this price. If you are particular about hearing every instrument and subtle detail in a track, Sony may suit you better. But if you value simplicity and an enjoyable listening experience over fine tuning your audio, AirPods make a lot of sense.
What surprised me most is Apple's approach to active noise cancellation (ANC). Even its open fit earbuds, which do not use silicone ear tips to create a seal inside your ears, offer ANC. Apple claims the AirPods 5 deliver up to twice the ANC performance of the previous generation. That is a significant improvement for anyone who finds silicone tips uncomfortable but still wants some relief from surrounding noise.
Pricing is another reason to consider the standard AirPods instead of immediately spending more on the Pro models. With the AirPods 5 priced at the same launch price as the AirPods 4, the newer model is the one I would look at first, provided the actual selling prices are comparable. During the current Amazon sale, there may not be a direct offer on these earbuds, but compatible credit card discounts could still bring the effective price down.
Sony earbuds: For listeners who want to hear every detail
Sony has one of the most versatile wireless earbud lineups, ranging from affordable WF series models to premium 1000X series earbuds. If you have ever experienced Sony's premium earbuds, you will know why I keep coming back to their sound quality. The soundstage feels spacious, instruments are easier to distinguish, and you can sometimes hear subtle details in familiar songs that you had not noticed before.
What I particularly like is the level of customisation available through Sony's Sound Connect app. You can adjust the equaliser to suit your preferences, change noise cancellation settings and personalise how the earbuds respond to touch controls. However, if you prefer bass heavy audio straight out of the box, Sony may not be your first choice. Its appeal lies more in sound separation, detail and the ability to fine tune your listening experience than in simply delivering overpowering bass.
I also like Sony's design approach. Its earbuds generally have a stemless, compact design, which makes them worth considering if you dislike the look of AirPods. Some budget models are available in transparent finishes, too, giving them a distinctive appearance compared with conventional glossy or matte earbuds.
If you want to spend more, the Sony WF-1000XM5 is worth considering for its premium audio, effective ANC and noise reduction for calls. Sony also supports high quality audio codecs such as LDAC on compatible devices.
During the current Amazon sale, the WF-1000XM5 is particularly appealing if you find it at a substantial discount. Compatible credit card offers could make the deal even more attractive. For someone who prioritises sound quality and wants control over how music sounds, this is the option I would seriously consider.
JBL earbuds: For bass lovers and feature packed designs
I would not ordinarily put JBL in the same comparison as Apple and Sony if we were looking only at my personal listening preferences. However, the current sale offers make its premium earbuds worth considering, particularly if you want powerful bass, extra features and something that feels different from conventional wireless earbuds.
JBL is the brand I would look at if I wanted music to sound energetic, with deep bass that works particularly well for hip hop, electronic music and workout playlists. That does not mean you cannot customise the sound. JBL's Headphones app lets you adjust the equaliser and fine tune listening settings, so you can experiment with a sound profile that suits you.
The feature that stands out to me is the charging case on the JBL Tour Pro 3. It has a 1.57 inch touchscreen that lets you control playback, manage calls, adjust sound settings and access other functions without constantly reaching for your smartphone. You can even use the case as an audio transmitter to connect to compatible entertainment systems, including those found on aeroplanes.
During the current sale, the JBL Tour Pro 3 becomes an interesting alternative if you want premium features without necessarily paying the full launch price. Check the final selling price and available bank offers before making a decision.
