The tragedy happened at Nrisinghapur village, about 100km from state capital Kolkata, on Tuesday night, when about 40 people had consumed hooch , according to Nadia district council president Rikta Kundu. The state government has ordered a CID investigation into the incident.

The surgery to transplant Aditi Sinha’s liver on Chandi Charan Ghosh, 52, a resident of Nadia district, started at 5 am on Thursday at state-run SSKM Hospital and continued for more than seven hours.

Charu Market police arrested Chaitali Mukherjee after viewing CCTV footage of the incident, wherein the boy suffered head injuries as well as bruises on his hands and legs. She was later remanded in judicial custody by a Kolkata court.
