Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf stepped down as Army Chief on Wednesday, November 28 and will be sworn in as a civilian leader for a second five-year term on Thursday, November 29. In doing so, he has fulfilled one of the long-held demands of his political rivals. In Karachi, former leaders Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif welcomed the resignation. Musharraf now aims to become a civilian president, supported by his hand-picked successor, Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani as army commander.
