A dramatic escalation unfolded across West Asia as multiple U.S. military installations in the region reportedly came under Iranian missile attack following joint Israeli-U.S. strikes on Iran earlier on February 28. Explosions were reported near the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, with authorities urging residents to seek shelter. Sirens rang out across the island nation amid claims of incoming projectiles. In Qatar, two Iranian missiles were reportedly intercepted over Doha, according to CNN, after alarms sounded near Al Udeid Air Base—the largest U.S. military base in the Middle East. The U.S. Embassy in Qatar had earlier issued a shelter-in-place and “duck and cover” advisory to American citizens. Airspace disruptions quickly spread across the Gulf. The United Arab Emirates temporarily shut its airspace after loud blasts were heard in Abu Dhabi, while reports of explosions also emerged from Kuwait and Jordan—both home to U.S. military facilities.
