Wayanad landslide deaths rise: 2024 Disaster memories revived; IMD issues rain red alert| Kerala

At least two people were killed and seven others injured after a landslide struck a tunnel construction site at Kalladi near Meppady in Kerala's Wayanad district on July 7. The landslide hit an under-construction tunnel road project connecting Malappuram and Wayanad, trapping several workers. Rescue operations are underway with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Fire and Rescue Services, police, Forest Department and local residents. While Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan confirmed two deaths, reports quoting the Chief Minister said several workers remain missing. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Wayanad and neighbouring Kozhikode amid heavy rainfall, with orange alerts for Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod.
