Citing security reasons, the govt has modified existing rules for telecom companies. Instead of the one-year duration, the govt has instructed phone companies to store call records for 2 years. Login and logout details of services such as internet access and mail will now be maintained for 2 years. Records of calls made through mobile applications will also be maintained for 2 years. Unless instructed otherwise, phone companies may destroy the data stored after 2 years.
