But the home side lost the crucial wicket of Ricky Ponting, who had to be in the thick of plans if Australia were to successfully chase down the target of 413. At lunch, the Aussies were 142-3, still needing 271 runs to win. Later, the tourists went on to capitalise on this Aussie loss and register a memorable win in Perth, defeating hosts by 72 runs.
