Iran war news highlights: The war between the United States, backed by Israel, and Iran has been going on for over a month now as missiles continue to fly over the skies in West Asia amid efforts to bring peace in the region. Israel struck Iran’s nuclear facilities hours after threatening to “escalate and expand” its campaign against Tehran on Friday. Iran vowed to retaliate and struck a base in Saudi Arabia, wounding U.S. service members and damaging planes.
A month into the war, however, there appeared to be a breakthrough as Tehran agreed to allow humanitarian aid and agricultural shipments through the Strait of Hormuz in response to a UN request. Ali Bahreini, the country's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, said Iran agreed to “facilitate and expedite” such movement.
The vital waterway usually handles a fifth of the world’s oil shipments and nearly a third of the world’s fertiliser trade. While markets and governments have largely focused on blocked oil and natural gas supplies, restrictions on fertiliser ingredients and trade threaten farming and food security worldwide.
“This measure reflects Iran’s continued commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts and ensuring that essential aid reaches those in need without delay,” Bahreini said on the social platform X. The UN earlier announced a task force to address the ripple effects that the war has had on aid delivery.
The Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base wounded at least 12 American troops, according to two US officials familiar with the situation, quoted by the Associated Press. Two of them were seriously hurt, according to one of the officials. Both of the officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military matters. Several refuelling aircraft were damaged
Iran launches more missiles targeting Israel
Israel’s military said early Saturday that Iran fired missiles targeting the country.
The latest missiles follow an earlier salvo that killed 1 person and injured more across Israel late Friday and into Saturday.
Sirens sounded in northern Israel, along the border with Lebanon, where rocket and drone attacks from Hezbollah have been constant during the war.
Palestinian authorities say Israeli forces killed 3 people in the West Bank
Hundreds attended the funeral on Friday of a 22-year-old man who was killed overnight during an Israeli raid in the Qalandiya refugee camp area in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
During the funeral, masked mourners carrying weapons shot in the air. The Israeli army raided the camp again, and the Palestinian ministry said another man was killed.
In a separate incident on Friday evening, a 15-year-old boy died after being shot during a raid on the Dheisheh refugee camp, near Bethlehem, the ministry said.
Israel’s military said that “violent disturbances” occurred during two distinct incidents in the Qalandiya area, including people throwing stones at troops. Soldiers responded with live fire toward “key instigators, and hits were identified,” the military said in a statement.
Trump says he really believes he’s a peacemaker
The president made the comment when he was asked what he would like his legacy to be. He responded by saying that “it doesn’t sound right for me to say this, but I’d love my legacy to be made as a great peacemaker.”
He added, “I really believe I’m a peacemaker. It doesn’t seem it right now, but I think I’m a peacemaker.”

Trump says economy will take off like a ‘rocket ship’ after Iran war
The president said in his speech at the FII Priority Summit in Miami that economic growth would surge once the war ends, suggesting that the world would benefit from Iran no longer pursuing nuclear weapons or using terrorist proxies.
“And I think you’re going to see a rocket ship, because we won’t have that dark cloud hanging over our head,” Trump said.
The president played down recent declines in the stock market, saying “It hasn’t been that bad” and that he thought oil prices were going to be higher than they are now.

Iran war news LIVE updates: IRGC claims widespread attacks on US forces
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has claimed the targeting of six tactical vessels operated by the US military in the Persian Gulf waters, saying that it left a large number of American forces killed in the process.
“In continuation of the 84th wave of Operation True Promise 4, the IRGC naval units conducted a hybrid operation against US and Israeli terrorists deployed in al-Shoyoukh port as well as Dubai’s coasts and port, hitting downhearted American troops and their tactical hardware precisely,” the public relations department of the IRGC said in a statement.
The IRGC claimed that six US landing craft utility (LCU) were struck in the operation, which was carried out using homegrown ballistic missiles, such as Qadr 380 cruise missiles.
“Given field reports, three of the combat vessels sank after the (retaliatory) strikes, whilst the rest are aflame,” the IRGC further claimed.
According to the statement, kamikaze drones were employed to launch attacks against the gathering centres of US drone unit personnel on the coast and against one of the hotels in Dubai.

Iran war news LIVE updates: Africa is hurting again from a global crisis it had no part in starting
From the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine, and now the Middle East conflict, the world’s fastest-growing continent — with a population rivalling China's and India's — is at the painful end of ripple effects that include a global scramble for critical resources like fuel and fertiliser.
With the majority of African countries being net importers of refined oil products, the impact has been swift, leading to rising retail fuel prices in Africa and associated increases in the costs of most goods and services.
Experts say African countries are deeply integrated into global economies and are exposed to global shocks due to their dependence on major economies.
The United Nations on Friday said it is pursuing a way to allow fertiliser to resume safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz, hoping it would build confidence in wider diplomatic efforts around the Iran war.

Israel stopped a missile fired from Yemen on Saturday, the first time it had faced fire from that country since the war in the Middle East erupted last month. Concerns rose about the Iran-backed Houthis' possible entry into the fighting.
Iran US war LIVE updates: Who are the Houthis, Iran’s allies in Yemen?
The Houthis are a military, political and religious movement led by the Houthi family and based in northern Yemen. They adhere to the Zaydi sect of Shi'ite Islam.
The Houthis have a history of fighting guerrilla wars with the Yemeni army but expanded their power and built closer ties with Iran after the 2011 "Arab Spring" protests.
Seizing on instability in the country, the group captured the Yemeni capital Sanaa in 2014.
The following year, Saudi Arabia led a coalition of Arab states in a military intervention to attempt to dislodge the group.
The Houthis demonstrated significant missile and drone capabilities, attacking oil installations and vital infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
After years of fighting that led to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, the U.N. brokered a 2022 truce between the warring sides in Yemen that has since held.

Iran US war LIVE updates: Iran could fire large missile salvos at Israel, Think Tank report says
The Think Tank Institute for the Study of War analysis says Iran could fire large missile salvos at Israel to impose psychological effects on Israeli civilians by consistently forcing them to take shelter and keeping the country under constant alert.
The report said that Iran's use of cluster munitions in its attacks on Israel reflected its inability to threaten the latter's military targets, and hence resorted to inflict psychological effects.
"Iran may be attempting to maximize the effects of its limited capacity to launch large missile salvos at Israel by launching small missile salvos throughout the day to impose psychological effects on Israeli civilians by consistently forcing them to take shelter and keeping the country under constant alert. Iran is spreading out its launches throughout the day, often pausing for several hours between launches. Spreading out ballistic missile launches over a long period of time presumably increases the number of times per day that Israeli civilians must seek shelter," the analysis said.
"Such a strategy is suboptimal and likely reflects the US-Israeli combined force's degradation of Iran's ability to launch large-scale missile attacks. The combined force's degradation of Iran's missile capabilities has prevented Iran from consistently launching large-scale missile attacks against Israel during the current conflict, however. Iran has increasingly used cluster munitions in its attacks on Israel during the war, which likely reflects Iran's inability to meaningfully threaten discrete military targets in Israel and efforts to inflict psychological effects on Israeli civilians," it added.

Iran US war LIVE updates: Israel says it faces first incoming missile from Yemen
Israel's military said Yemen had launched a missile toward Israel early Saturday morning, the first time it had faced fire from that country.
Sirens went off around Beer Sheba and the area near Israel's main nuclear research centre for the third time overnight Friday into Saturday as Iran and Hezbollah continued to fire on Israel overnight.
The Houthis, a rebel group backed by Tehran, have held Yemen's capital, Sanaa, since 2014. They did not immediately acknowledge launching an attack against Israel.
The Houthis so far had stayed out of the war as the rebels have had an uneasy ceasefire for years with Saudi Arabia, which launched a war against the group on behalf of Yemen's exiled government in 2015.
