Prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday was greeted with a hug by UAE president and Abu Dhabi ruler Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as he arrived to convey his personal condolences on the demise of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the former president of the Gulf nation.

Sheikh Khalifa, who took over as the president in November 2004, passed away May 13 at the age of 73 after a long illness. The Indian government announced one day of state mourning.

"I am touched by the special gesture of my brother, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, of coming to welcome me at Abu Dhabi airport. My gratitude to him," Modi tweeted.

In a video shared by news agency ANI, PM Modi can be seen walking towards the UAE president with open arms as he arrived for his brief visit, post attending the G7 Summit in Germany. the UAE ruler was also accompanied by senior members of the royal family, news agency PTI reported.

This is the first interaction between the two leaders since the UAE leader's election as the new president of the Gulf nation last month, news agency PTI reported.

PM Modi last visited the UAE in August 2019 when he received the nation’s highest award - the Order of Zayed - conferred upon him by the late UAE President.

Vice president M Venkaiah Naidu had visited the UAE on May 15 to offer formal condolences on behalf of the Government of India to the UAE leadership on the demise of Sheikh Khalifa.

Earlier today, the prime minister attended the G7 summit, at which leaders of the world's seven richest economies discussed key global issues including the Ukraine war, food security and counter-terrorism.
