US-Iran news highlights: Trump's ‘eternity’ wish for Israel, Hezbollah; Tehran peace deal expected ‘over next week’

One American soldier and one British soldier died during a training exercise in Iraq, U.S. and U.K. officials said Monday without releasing further details.

The deaths occurred Sunday at an air base in Irbil in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq, where the U.S. has retained a presence, the U.S. Army said in a post on X. The statement said the soldier’s identity is being withheld until 24 hours after his or her family has been notified.

The U.K.’s Ministry of Defence said in a separate post that the family of the British soldier has been notified and requested a “period of grace” before more details are released.

Iran’s chief negotiator with the US and parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf spoke on Monday with his Lebanese counterpart, Nabih Berri, regarding Israel’s invasion of the country.

In a post on X, Ghalibaf said: “In my conversation with my brother, Mr. Nabih Berri, the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, I emphasised that if the crimes of the Zionist regime in Lebanon continue, we will not only halt the dialogue process but also stand firmly against them.”

He concluded his message by declaring: “Long live the resistance! Long live the defence of the motherland! Long live the brotherhood of the Iranian and Lebanese peoples!”

He told ABC News he has not yet given final approval to a memorandum of understanding, saying, “I still have to get a few more points.”

Trump said talks with Tehran are continuing “at a rapid pace,” even as regional tensions remain high after recent exchanges of fire.

He also said he held discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives of Hezbollah, claiming progress on reducing violence in Lebanon.

According to Trump, “all shooting will stop,” with both sides agreeing not to carry out further attacks.

Iran war news LIVE: US envoy Mike Waltz told the UN Security Council that President Donald Trump has “proposed a clear sequence” to end fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

He said Hezbollah “must stop its attacks in Israel” first, followed by “a gradual de-escalation” and then “a cessation of hostilities”.

Waltz focused on Hezbollah as an “Iranian proxy” and cited Israeli civilian injuries, without referring to Israeli strikes in Lebanon.

He added US support for Lebanon’s government, saying: “We are backing the Lebanese government’s efforts to make Lebanon great again.”

In Europe, France barred Israeli government officials from attending the Eurosatory defence expo in Paris, according to Israel’s Defence Ministry.

Separately, an Israeli air strike on the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza killed at least one person, local reports said.

He said any future arrangement should include a uniformed UN force to support de-escalation, dialogue, coordination, and assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces, as part of efforts toward a long-term solution to the conflict.

Guterres has proposed three possible options for the mission, ranging from about 2,000 to more than 5,500 personnel. Currently, around 7,500 UNIFIL peacekeepers from nearly 50 countries are deployed in southern Lebanon along the Blue Line separating Lebanon and Israel.

Israeli forces raided the Kafr Aqab neighbourhood north of East Jerusalem, firing tear gas and stun grenades. Israeli authorities also issued a demolition order for a Palestinian home and commercial building in Jaba, north of Jerusalem, a property that houses two families comprising 13 people.
