Typhoon Rammasun, which means "god of thunder" in Thai, was causing winds of up to 111 kilometers per hour in the ocean off Tokyo Bay, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
But the season's second typhoon was moving northeast at 35 kilometres an hour and as expected to dissipate in the Pacific Ocean without making landfall.
The typhoon comes 10 days after a devastating cyclone hit Myanmar, which says 62,000 people are dead or missing.
