In two cases of rape with minors, two rapists were sentenced to death in Madhya Pradesh on Friday. In one of the cases the rapist who killed the six-year-old victim was given two death sentences -- one for rape and the other for murder, the state public prosecutor said.

As per the director general, Public Prosecution, Rajendra Kumar, this is the first time when two death sentences were pronounced on the same day in the state.

Trial in both the cases were fast-tracked in special courts. In the first case, which involved a 5-year-old girl and took place in Katni, over 460 km north east of Bhopal, the trial was completed in 5 days. Thus, the conviction came within 22 days of the crime.

In the second incident in which the 6-year-old girl was raped and killed in Gwalior, more than 425 km north of Bhopal, the trial was completed within 13 days and the rapist was punished within 38 days of the crime.

In the Katni case, according to public prosecutor DS Taran, autorickshaw driver Rajkumar Kaul, 35, used to regularly ferry the child to her school and drop her home after school hours. On July 4, he picked the child from her home but did not reach the school. He took the girl to a desolate place, raped her and dropped her home after the school hours.

The girl’s parents files a complaint the next day with the police who booked the autorickshaw driver under different sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on July 6. The charge-sheet was filed in the court on July 23. The rapist was sentenced to death under section 376 (punishment for rape) and one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 under section 323 (for voluntarily causing hurt), according to director general public prosecution Rajendra Kumar.

In the second incident that took place in Gwalior, special judge Archna Singh sentenced the convict Jitendra Kushwah, 23, to death under section 302 of IPC (murder) and another death penalty under section 376 (a) (b) of IPC (punishment for rape).

According to the prosecution, the convict, an icecream vendor, abducted the girl and later raped and murdered her on June 20 night. The girl was in Gwalior with her parents to attend a wedding. The body of the girl was recovered the next day from a jungle and the accused was arrested with the help of evidence gathered from a CCTV camera.

The DG public prosecution announced a citation to special public prosecutor DS Taran for his efforts in getting the accused punished in the Katni rape case.
