Actor Akshay Kumar, who often emphasises on women learning martial arts, wishes they never had to learn the art. The 49-year-old who was in the Capital on Monday to promote his film Naam Shabana along with actors Taapsee Pannu, Anupam Kher and Manoj Bajpayee, says: “Honestly, I don’t think women should learn martial arts. I want them to enjoy and roam around freely, but sadly that’s not the case. But aaj zamana waisa hai ki there is no other option but you have to learn martial arts. It’s a sad thing that they have to learn to defend themselves.”
While the actor hopes that the film will inspire more women to learn martial arts, he wants to be more practical about it. Akshay, who runs free martial arts classes for women in Mumbai, wants results and says, “You know making videos and talking about it on social media is all very good, I know that’s important. But then I believe in practical aspect of it.”
“You have to be practical and learn martial arts yourself. I believe in that. Lots of women come to train at my training centre. So far in Mumbai, we have trained around 18000 women. I want more and more women to learn, and learn how to defend themselves,” adds Akshay, who along with actor Taapsee Pannu released a video titled Kohni Maar on social media that taught a self-defence technique to women to deter attackers.
