Trust Akshay Kumar to come up with something new to promote his films. For his sports drama Gold that celebrates India winning its first gold medal in Olympics as an independent country, the actor has gone the ‘historic’ way.

Monuments across cities like Kolkata, Pune, Jaipur, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Delhi took on a golden hue and were bathed in gold-coloured light in the evening.

Sharing the post on a Kolkata monument turning gold, Akshay wrote: #KolkataTurnsGold Watch the Prinsep Ghat turn Gold today to unite for our first Gold medal victory. @t2telegraph #IndiaTurnsGold.

Incidentally, marking 70 years of Independent India’s first gold medal victory at the 1948 Olympics, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar treated his fans with a video featuring prominent Indian sportspersons as well.

The choice of Kolkata’s Prinsep Ghats should be relevant as it has a strong Raj connection--it is a ghat built in 1841 during the British Raj, along the Hooghly river. What’s more is that its Palladian (a European style of architecture) porch is in the memory of Anglo-Indian scholar and antiquary James Prinsep and was designed by W. Fitzgerald.

The other monuments that went Gold included Kanpur’s JK Temple, Statue Circle in Jaipur, Pune’s private-owned gated cosmopolitan community called Magarpatta City, Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront, Mumbai’s iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and finally Delhi’s PVR Plaza.

The actor and his co-star, Mouni Roy, were in Delhi to promote the film. The actor’s fans went berserk as he was seen at a theatre in the city. Akshay also shared a video in which he can be seen doing some stunts as crowd cheers him on.

It may be recalled that Gold is the story independent India’s first Olympic winning hockey team and their struggle to achieve their goal. While actors Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Singh among others play the players and coach of the said team, Akshay plays the rakish yet immensely shrewd hockey team manager, Tapan. Many are of the belief that if India could manage the unimaginable feat, so early after independence, tackling lack of facilities that matched international standards and racism, it is because of the belief Tapan had in his team.

Mouni, who plays Tapan’s wife in the film, is making her Bollywood debut with Gold. She earned her stripes as a successful actor on Indian television with serials like Naagin and Devon ke Dev... Mahadev. Mouni’s character in the film is called Monobina Das and the film boasts of a song on the character’s name. In fact, two songs, released by the makers, Chad Gayi and Monobina, give us a peek into Tapan’s character, where we see him as a slightly irreverent yet footloose and fancy-free individual, much to the embarrassment of his wife. Gold has been directed by Reema Kagti, a close associate of Farhan and Zoya Akhtar, known for her directorials such as Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and the Aamir Khan starrer Talash.
