Akshay Kumar is the king of Independence Day weekend and he has proved it once again with Gold box office collection. Akshay Kumar has delivered six straight hits in the last three years and trade sources are confident his latest film is headed that way too. Gold’s box office collection on day one was estimated to be over Rs 25 crore, which gave it a head start over John Abraham’s Satyameva Jayate. Gold is also the biggest first day opener of Akshay’s career.
Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh said both the films did well at the box office. “The BIG HOLIDAY [#IndependenceDay] results in BIG NUMBERS at the BO... Both, #Gold and #SatyamevaJayate have TERRIFIC Day 1... Both, Akshay and John record their HIGHEST *Day 1* biz... The *combined* total is approx Rs 45 cr [+/-], which is HUMONGOUS... Yesss, BO is on (fire),” he wrote in a tweet.
Taran also tweeted that solo movie releases on holidays will soon become a rarity. “Save this tweet... Solo releases on holidays/festivals will be a rarity... Get ready to witness multiple films clashing on important date...ye toh shuruat hai picture abhi baaki hai,” he wrote in his tweet.
The film’s collection was bolstered by the fact that it was a holiday on the account of Independence Day and the film’s team celebrates India’s sporing victory immediately after it became a free country. Directed by Reema Kagti and starring Mouni Roy and Amit Sadh in an ensemble cast, Gold has got largely positive reviews.

The report said Gold started August 15 morning with over 60 per cent occupancy and the numbers just went up as the day progressed. Positive word of mouth, Akshay’s star pull and the universal theme of the film also gave it an edge over Satyameva Jayate that got an adult certificate.
In the movie, Akshay plays manager Tapan Das, who led India to its first Olympic gold as an independent nation in a fictional 1948. Jyoti Sharma Bawa, in her Hindustan Times review of Gold, wrote, “Films become important for everything they say, and sometimes for what they don’t. Before we sit down and thrash out a Gold movie review, it is important to list everything that Akshay Kumar’s Independence Day offering is not. In these divisive times, when using the P-word can get you immediate claps and whistles, Gold shows them as our allies and encourages a healthy relationship. Its Independence Day rhetoric can be schmaltzy but is never cloying, asking us, as citizens, to dream and achieve them, over decades and generations, because only that can make a country great.”
According to trade sources, advance bookings for Gold are rising steadily, especially in Tier I cities. The Akshay Kumar film was not impacted by the clash with John Abraham’s film as it attracted largely family audiences. Trade also put a lot of emphasis on Akshay’s pull and given his track record it is not hard to fathom why.
