Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan’s next film with Navdeep Singh - in which he plays a Naga Sadhu - has been renamed and now has a release date. Previously titled Hunter, it will now be called Laal Kaptaan and is all set for a theatrical release on September 6. The makers have also released the first poster of the movie, officially revealing Saif’s look, the new name and the release date.
The official handle of Eros Now shared the poster and wrote, “Raakh se janmaa...Raakh ho jaane ko #LaalKaptaan #HuntBegins6thSeptember.”
“Saif is a gifted actor and this script allows him to showcase his talent like never before. Laal Kaptaan boasts of a larger-than-life landscape, dramatic characters and a gripping story that makes it a first of its kind,” Sunil Lulla, the managing director of Eros International said in a statement.
NH 10 helmer Navdeep Singh has directed the movie and Rai said he has full faith in the story. “Laal Kaptaan is that kind of film that is definitely going to generate a genre and narrative style of its own,” he added.
The film has been in production for some time. The team shot in Rajasthan and pictures from the sets leaked Saif’s looks, sparking online debates that it is inspired by Johnny Depp’s character from The Pirates of Caribbean.
Saif also reacted to comparisons of his look with those of Johny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow from The Pirates of Caribbean. A Mid Day report quoted him as saying “My nephew Kiaan [Karisma Kapoor’s son] and son [Ibrahim] saw the photographs before they had leaked, and said, ‘Hey, that’s Jack Sparrow.’ The resemblance was because of the jacket and dreadlocks. While filming, I never thought about it. If I did, I wouldn’t have done it. But, everything will make sense when you see the film.”
Saif plays a Naga sadhu - one half of two warring brothers, in the film that is being touted as a revenge drama. The film also stars Mukkabaaz actor Zoya Hussain and Manav Vij.
Saif recently had a fresh lease of life infused in his career with his digital debut, Sacred Games, garnering appreciation from all quarters. Before the web series that also starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pankaj Tripathi, Saif has several disastrous releases—Rangoon, Chef and Kaalakaandi—all bombing at the box office. He is currently working on the second season of the Netflix series where Kalki Koechlin and Ranvir Shorey have joined the cast.
