A Navratri-themed condom ad featuring Bollywood actor Sunny Leone has sparked protests in Gujarat, after a Surat-based group took offence to the ad’s message.
A condom advertisement featuring Sunny Leone has drawn protests from a Surat-based group. The ad, which was displayed on hoardings across the city, was shared on social media by people. City-based group Hindu Yuva Vahini staged a protest at one of the ad’s locations, according to the Times of India.
Sunny Leone is the brand ambassador for a condom brand. Protest took place against its Navratri -themed ads.
“The message in Gujarati on the hoarding reads ‘Aa Navratri a ramo, parantu premthi’ - this Navratri, play but with love. The insinuation on the hoardings from a condom brand insults the religious sentiments of Hindus,” Narendra Chaudhary, a business man who serves as the group’s leader told TOI.
“This cannot be tolerated and our protests will get stronger if these hoardings are not removed immediately. Protests are necessary to deter others from trying something similar again in future,” he continued.
Navratri is an important period of festivities for Hindus, which is celebrated over nine days. Sunny Leone, the adult star-turned-Bollywood actor is the brand ambassador for the condom brand.
