Establishments defaulting on provident fund dues owe more than Rs 2,500 crore together in their contribution to the scheme, the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.
"There are a number of establishments in default of PF dues and the amount of arrears outstanding from 76,958 defaulting establishments was Rs 2,530.07 crore as on March 31, 2006," Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes said in a reply.
Labour cases: More than 12,000 cases were pending up to March, 31 this year in central government industrial tribunal-cum-labour courts, he said in another reply.
The tribunals disposed of 2,319 cases from April 1, last year to March, 31 this year.
The figures exclude cases heard by five new tribunals set up in Chandigarh, Delhi, Ernakulam, Guwahati and Ahmedabad, he added.
Social security: The government is considering formulation of a social security scheme for workers in the unorganised sector.
Consultations, Fernandes said, were also on with different departments, ministeries and the National Commission for Enterprises in the unorganised sector over plans to bring in a legislation for workers in that category.
ESI hospitals: The ESI has in principle given its approval for building a 50-bed hospital at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh.
It has also sanctioned a ten bedded diagnostic centre at Raipur in Chattisgarh and has asked the state government to give its consent to build a 50-bed hospital there, he said.
