Vodafone India unveiled its new Vodafone Mobile Application Store, powered by white-label mobile app storefront provider Appia.
The new Vodafone India store boasts more than 10,000 free and premium apps and games optimized for Android, Java, Symbian and BlackBerry devices, promising a one-stop shopping experience for the operator's 145 million 2G and 3G subscribers. In addition to content from local providers including Hungama, India Games, Nazara and Spice, the marketplace offers Vodafone-branded apps like Portfolio Tracker, Vodafone TV and Chhota Comics. To access the store, Vodafone customers can text <VStore> or <Apps> to 111 from their GPRS-enabled handsets and click on the url in the response message--subscribers can also log in to the Vodafone Live homepage.
Appia (formerly known as PocketGear) offers application discovery and distribution services supporting more than 3,500 different devices. The firm now powers app stores for over 40 partners in 200 countries--its Appia Developer Program includes over 30,000 application developer partners and more than 140,000 free and premium applications. In March 2011, Appia completed a $10 million investment round led by venture capital firm Venrock.
