Delhi rain: Light to moderate showers in west Delhi, NCR likely soon, says IMD

Southwest monsoon in Delhi has been delayed by a day, but is expected to arrive in the next few days, according to the weather department.

Parts of Delhi and the national capital region (NCR) are likely to witness light to moderate rain over the next two hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its latest weather bulletin on Tuesday.

“Light to moderate intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas of isolated places of West Delhi (Punjabi bagh, Rajouri garden, Patel Nagar), NCR (Dadri) Sohana (Haryana) during the next two hours,” the met department issued an advisory.

The IMD also said that "conditions are favourable" for southwest monsoon to advance further into parts of Bihar, some more parts of UP and remaining parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir during next 24 hours.

“Conditions would continue to become favourable for further advance of Monsoon into remaining parts of Arabian Sea & Gujarat; some parts of Rajasthan; remaining parts of MP, UP, Uttarakhand, HP and J&K; some parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh and Delhi during subsequent 48 hours,” it added.

The arrival of southwest monsoon in Delhi has been delayed as it was initially predicted to arrive by its usual onset date of June 27.

“Peak rainfall activity during this upcoming spell is expected on Thursday. We will see light to moderate rainfall over Delhi, whereas on Wednesday, it will be mainly light rainfall,” RK Jenamani, a scientist at the Met department, had said on Monday.

“Based on the movement of the monsoon, a date for Delhi can soon be determined,” he said.

The weather department had revised the normal date of the onset of the southwest monsoon for Delhi in 2020 from June 29 to 27. It came a day early in 2018, but was late by three days in both 2017 and 2016.

Last year, the IMD announced monsoon in Delhi two days earlier on June 25. However, it stalled by two weeks and eventually arrived in the capital on July 13, the slowest arrival in 18 years.
