New Delhi, Three men were apprehended for allegedly storing and transporting banned Chinese/plastic manjha, with 1,398 reels of the prohibited kite string recovered from a car in west Delhi, an official of the crime branch said on Wednesday.
The accused, Rajesh , Asad and Sohail were apprehended on Tuesday night, police said, adding that the vehicle allegedly used for transporting the banned manjha was also seized, police said.
A case has been registered at the Crime Branch police station in Pushp Vihar, they said.
According to police, the action followed secret information received on August 8 that Rajesh, a resident of Nangloi, along with his associates, would arrive near Khayala carrying a large quantity of banned Chinese/plastic manjha for clandestine sale.
"A team was formed, and a trap was laid on Tuesday. At around 2 am, the team reached near Khayala. Shortly afterwards, a silver-coloured car was spotted approaching from the Khayala-Paschim Vihar drain side towards Raghubir Nagar," the officer said.
The vehicle was intercepted, and the three occupants were apprehended. During a search, several plastic bags and cardboard boxes containing the prohibited manjha were found, police said.
A total of 1,398 reels were recovered from the vehicle.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly disclosed that they were transporting the manjha for sale, police said.
The material was being carried in violation of notifications issued by the Delhi government's Environment Department prohibiting the manufacture, sale, storage and use of such manjha, they said.
Rajesh and Asad work as labourers, while Sohail has undergone ITI training and is also engaged in labour work, the police said.
"We are now investigating the source of the banned manjha, its intended purchasers and other persons allegedly involved in its manufacture, storage, transportation and sale," the officer said.
