Two people were beaten to death while another critically injured by a mob in Rewari on Friday evening, police said, adding that efforts to arrest the accused are underway.

According to police, the deceased are Jatin, 22, and Himesh, 20, while the injured has been identified as Yashpal, 21.

The incident took place between 10.30am and 1am on the main road connecting Gokalpur village. The fight started between two groups of students and their friends outside a university in Rewari, following which several men arrived on motorcycles with tape covering their registration plates.

Police said men from both sides were carrying sticks and sharp-edged weapons. After the clash, everyone fled from the university gate.

A senior police official said the three victims were on a motorcycle when the suspects followed and rammed them with their Brezza car on a road in Gokalpur.

“They lost balance and fell on the road after which the mob assaulted them with sticks, rods and sharp-edged weapons before fleeing the spot,” the officer said, adding that Jatin and Himesh died at the spot and Yashpal was taken to a hospital.

Vidhyanand (single name), DSP (Kosli), said there was a long-standing fight between the two groups, which resulted in a clash on Friday morning.

“Two rival groups had gathered at the gates that resulted in a clash after which they had dispersed. However, a group followed the trio assaulted them after intercepting them on the road,” he said.

Vidhyanand said that multiple teams are carrying out raids to arrest the suspects involved the double murder. “The injured person in undergoing treatment at a hospital. His condition was stable. Forces have been deployed around the university and Gokalpur village to maintain law and order,” he said.

At the time of filing the news, process was on to complete the postmortem of both the deceased. Police were yet to register an FIR in the case.
