Baghpat , The bodies of two men, who had been missing for nearly three weeks, were found buried on the premises of a 'mahant' in Lachhaura village here, police said on Thursday.
The bodies of Ankit and Israr , both residents of Lachhaura, were recovered on Wednesday after police excavated the premises of mahant Naresh Nath, Superintendent of Police Suraj Kumar Rai said.
Two people have been detained for questioning in connection with the case, while Nath, identified by the police as the main accused, is absconding.
Rai said a missing persons case was registered at Chandinagar police station on July 29 after the two men went missing on July 25. A police team was formed and technical and other evidence was examined during the investigation.
Based on evidence gathered during the probe and information obtained from the detained persons, police learnt that the bodies had allegedly been buried on the mahant's premises. The bodies were subsequently recovered on Wednesday.
The bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition and were identified through their clothes and other belongings, police said. They were sent for postmortem examination after inquest proceedings in the presence of a magistrate.
A forensic team also collected evidence from the spot, police said.
Police sources said Ujjwal and Krishna Yadav have been detained and their roles, along with those of others, are being examined. Relevant legal sections have also been added based on the findings.
According to the police, the two men were known to Nath. Their families said Ankit and Israr were close friends and lived in houses opposite each other.
Israr's brother Farid said the two had left home on a motorcycle on July 25 and did not return. Their mobile phones were switched off from the evening of July 27, following which their families approached police.
Farid claimed that there had earlier been a dispute between Ankit's sister and the mahant over an alleged relationship. He said the two youths may have gone to the mahant's residential premises on July 25 to speak to him, but the family did not know what happened there.
