Mumbai: Two men were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly possessing fake notes that they were trying to circulate. A total of ₹19 lakh fake currency notes were seized.
The accused have been identified as Fahil Irfan Shaikh (21) and Meboob Nabisaab Shaikh (23) – a driver by profession.
As per the police officers, while patrolling in the area on Monday evening, they received a tip-off that a man was trying to buy a mobile phone and had given fake notes of the face value of ₹99,500.
The police reached the mobile phone shop and detained the accused. On searching him, the police team found several fake notes in the denominations of ₹500 and ₹2,000. The police arrested Fahil and seized the cash that he had taken out to buy the smartphone. On questioning, he revealed that he had got the notes from his associate who stays in Palghar.
A team of officers was then sent to Palghar where they arrested Mehboob. “When the officers searched his house, they found notes of the denomination of ₹500 and ₹2,000 similar to what was recovered from Shaikh,” said a police officer from Malwani police station.
The officers seized the notes and on counting them, they found the cash to be of the face value of ₹18 lakh.
“We have arrested both the men and are trying to find out from where Mehboob got the fake currency and whether they had circulated fake notes in the past as well,” added the officer. The police are also trying to find out how the two accused were connected and if they were a part of a gang.
The two were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and will be presented before the court today.
