How often have A.B. de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan rescued the Delhi Daredevils after Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag failed? They were busy again on Sunday, and raised 87 for the third wicket, helping the table leaders to a 14-run win over Rajasthan Royals. The reigning champions, fifth in the table with 13 points, must win their last game against Kolkata Knight Riders at Durban on Wednesday to hope for a semifinal slot, and pray that other results work in their favour.

The pair are the only Daredevils batsmen to have amassed 300-plus in this tournament. On a day when the mercury dipped to an uncomfortably cold 5 degrees centigrade, the onus fell on them again after Munaf Patel, struck early to have both Gambhir and Sehwag back in the dug out for next to nothing.

Mediumpacer Amit Singh supported the accurate Munaf well. However, he was not as good in the field, dropping Dilshan early on at short thirdman off Johan Botha.

Dilshan and AB paced their innings brilliantly, never in a hurry to play big shots. AB reached his third half-century of the tournament, a patient knock with the first six coming only in the 19th over. Dinesh Karthik’s breezy finish, after Dilshan fell in the 17th over, lifted the Daredevils to 150. The bowlers then took over, mixing attack and defence in appropriate measure to successfully defend what was on the board.
