The outcome of The Ashes bears a whole lot of significance as it marks the beginning of the next World Test
Championship cycle 2023-25. The winner of the Ashes 2023 not only will hold the bragging rights but also get an
upper hand in the WTC cycle given the length of the series – 5 Tests. The Ashes have seen some fiercely-contested
back-and-forth matches between England and Australia, often leading to one-way traffic.
England won the first 9 Ashes series in a row against Australia. Since Australia's first-Ashes series win in 1892,
the two teams went neck-and-neck, but somehow Australia always had managed to extend the lead. In the 1900s, with
the emergence of Don Bradman, Australia were ruthless, but England did not hold back either. Things changed
drastically a few decades later, when in 1986, Australia went on a rampage and won eight straight Ashes series in
row, extending England’s wait to get their hands on the Urn.
It took nearly 20 years but the moment finally arrived. In 2005, Michael Vaughan's England team and Ricky Ponting's
Australia played one of the greatest Ashes series of all time in which hosts England emerged victorious 2-1. That,
as many believe, changed the complexion of the series and gave England the confidence to compete. The next few Ashes
series were pretty predictable – Australia won on their soil and England theirs.
However, in 2013, after England beat Australia 3-0, the Aussies went ahead with the mantra 'Revenge is a dish best
served cold' and hammered England 5-0 in the return series a few months later. It is arguably one of the most
hotly-contested Ashes series of all time as tempers flared and controversies galore. Graeme Swann left the Ashes
series midway and never returned, while Kevin Pietersen's England career unofficially ended. The last Ashes – in
2021 – was won by Australia and quite comprehensively, winning the series 4-0.
