7:32 AM IST All set for the game to begin. The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of Namibia. It will be the pairing of Andy Balbirnie and Paul Stirling to open the innings for Ireland. Ruben Trumpelmann is all set to start proceedings with the ball. Let's go...
7:18 AM IST Namibia (Playing XI) - Jack Brassell, Louren Steenkamp, Gerhard Erasmus (C), Jan Frylinck, Zane Green (WK), Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton, Bernard Scholtz, JJ Smit, Waldo Smith, Ruben Trumpelmann, and Michael van Lingen.
7:17 AM IST Ireland (Playing XI) - Paul Stirling (C), Andy Balbirnie, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (WK), Curtis Campher, Cade Carmichael, George Dockrell, Gavin Hoey, Andy McBrine, Liam McCarthy, and Jai Moondra.
7:11 AM IST TOSS - Namibia win the toss and will BOWL first.
7:01 AM IST Wounded but dangerous - Namibia come in on the back of a tough lesson. In September they were swept 3-0 by South Africa in the first-ever bilateral ODI series between the two sides. The margins were a 99-run win by DLS in the opener, then 157 runs, then nine wickets. In the decider, Namibia were bowled out for 156 in the 37th over. It is worth remembering that South Africa rested almost all of their limited-overs regulars for that series, and Namibia have shown they can beat this opposition in shorter formats. South Africa lost two of the three T20Is they played against their hosts. The ODI format, with its longer contests, is a different test, and Windhoek is the venue where Namibia want to answer it. Stay tuned for the toss and team sheets.
7:01 AM IST Something to prove - Ireland arrive under Paul Stirling and with a point to prove. Their last ODI series ended in a 4-0 home defeat against Afghanistan in August, and the squad here largely resembles the one from that series. There is one notable recall in Matthew Humphreys. Six of the touring players, Tucker, Tector, Ross Adair, Mark Adair, Campher and Dockrell, were recently picked at the ILT20 auction. The squad also has plenty of experience in Stirling, Balbirnie, Tector, Tucker and Dockrell, so the question is whether that group can turn a rough August into a fresh start in Africa.
7:00 AM IST Greetings folks - Hello and a very warm welcome to all the fans joining us for this riveting contest, where a brand-new rivalry gets its first chapter. Namibia host Ireland in a five-match ODI series that opens today, and every game will be played in the Namibian capital. Ireland have never played a men’s ODI against Namibia, so there is no head-to-head to lean on and no history to fall back on. It is a clean slate, and both sides have good reason to want it.
6:57 AM IST ... MATCH DAY ...
2:08 PM IST Building up to the World Cup playoffs - The opening ODI of Ireland’s five-match tour of Namibia is scheduled to be played at the High Performance Oval in Windhoek. The series represents an important opportunity for both teams to test their 50-over combinations, assess emerging players and build momentum ahead of the next phase of the international cricket calendar. Ireland arrive as the higher-ranked side, but Namibia will be keen to use home conditions and their familiarity with the local environment to challenge their visitors. For Ireland, this tour is about more than simply winning a bilateral series. The team has an opportunity to improve their adaptability in unfamiliar conditions while giving several players valuable international experience. Captain Paul Stirling leads a squad that combines established international batters with younger prospects, while the five-match schedule should provide the management with time to assess different combinations and identify players capable of taking on greater responsibility. Namibia, meanwhile, will view the series as a significant test against a Full Member nation. The Eagles have continued to pursue opportunities against stronger opposition as they prepare for the demands of the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup qualification cycle. Playing at home gives them an opportunity to demonstrate their progress, particularly in the areas of batting depth, bowling discipline and handling pressure against an experienced international side. Making use of home conditions - Namibia enter the series with an opportunity to measure their progress against a higher-ranked opponent. According to the rankings published ahead of the tour, Ireland are 12th and Namibia 16th in men's ODI cricket. Although the difference in ranking gives Ireland the edge on paper, Namibia's recent performances in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 competition suggest that they can compete effectively when their batting and bowling units perform together. The hosts will be looking towards captain Gerhard Erasmus to provide leadership and stability in the middle order. Erasmus is an influential all-rounder whose ability to rotate the strike, accelerate against spin, and contribute with the ball can help Namibia maintain balance throughout the innings. Jan Frylinck and Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton are also important options, offering batting flexibility and the ability to change the tempo of an innings. Louren Steenkamp is another player to watch in Namibia's batting line-up. His role at the top of the order will be important because a solid start would allow the middle order to attack without having to rebuild after early wickets. Namibia will need contributions from several batters rather than relying exclusively on their experienced players, particularly if Ireland's new-ball bowlers find early movement. With the ball, Namibia will look to exploit their knowledge of local conditions. Ruben Trumpelmann offers left-arm pace and the potential to trouble right-handed batters, while Bernard Scholtz provides a spin option capable of controlling the middle overs. JJ Smit's all-round ability gives the hosts another useful tactical option. Namibia's challenge will be to maintain discipline as Ireland's batters try to accelerate, especially in the final 15 overs. Eyes on the prize for Ireland - Ireland arrive with a squad led by Paul Stirling, with Lorcan Tucker serving as vice-captain. The selection includes experienced international performers alongside developing players, reflecting the team's dual objective of competing in the series and expanding its depth. Stirling's aggressive approach at the top of the order could be particularly influential. His ability to score quickly during the Powerplay can put Namibia under pressure before their spinners settle into their work. However, Ireland must balance attacking intent with the need to preserve wickets. A disciplined opening partnership would provide the platform for the middle order to dictate the pace of the innings. Andy Balbirnie and Harry Tector are central to Ireland's prospects with the bat. Balbirnie can provide composure and help negotiate challenging periods, while Tector's ability to combine conventional stroke play with calculated aggression makes him an important middle-order presence. If the opening pair fails to capitalise, these batters will be required to rebuild before launching a late assault. Tucker adds further value as a wicketkeeper-batter, offering another option to stabilise or accelerate the innings depending on the match situation. Curtis Campher and George Dockrell provide all-round depth, allowing Ireland to balance their batting resources with the need for additional bowling options. Ireland's bowling attack will also be an important factor. Mark Adair brings pace and experience, while Andy McBrine and Dockrell offer spin options for the middle overs. Gavin Hoey and Matthew Humphreys provide further opportunities for Ireland to test their bowling depth. The visitors will need to use their variations effectively, particularly if Namibia's batters become comfortable against pace. Form (Last 5 completed ODIs, most recent first) - NAM - WWLLL | IRE - LLLLL. Predictions? Ireland appear to have the advantage on paper because of their Full Member experience, established batting resources and greater exposure to high-level ODI cricket. Stirling, Balbirnie and Tector give them a strong foundation, while Adair and the spin options provide a balanced bowling attack. Namibia, however, should not be underestimated. Home conditions, familiarity with Windhoek and the leadership of Erasmus could help the Eagles make the contest much closer than the rankings suggest. Their best route to victory will be to take early wickets, limit Ireland's scoring during the middle overs, and build a substantial partnership at the top of their own innings. Ultimately, the opening ODI promises to be a valuable examination of both teams' depth and adaptability. Ireland will seek to establish their superiority from the outset, while Namibia will be determined to make a strong statement in front of their home supporters. With four more matches to follow, the first encounter could provide an early indication of how competitive the series will become.
