Ishant Sharma has somewhat troubled Joe Root - the batsman has not middled him more than once, and this is a good strategy to take Stokes out of his comfort zone as well. Bowl to Root from around the stump. Targeting that off stump, and further the lateral movement in the air

Time for a change, maybe?
The pitch has not opened up any doorways for Ashwin to trouble Ben Stokes - and this is a good batting surface, but there are a few spots that can trouble left-handed batsman. Maybe a time to bring in Shahbaz Nadeem?
Big Ben goes BIG!
SIX! Ben Stokes hits a maximum off R Ashwin. That came out of nowhere - brutal power, he did not even hit it that hard. Game on!
Jasprit Bumrah to Joe Root - FOUR!
SHOT! A little bit of width on offer from Bumrah, rightly punished by Joe Root. He is batting at 130+, can't bowl that line to him. Root is well settled and that is a relatively easier shot from the batsman for a boundary.
Bumrah to Stokes - FOUR!
FOUR! A good comeback from Stokes, he was nearly beaten with a perfect yorker from Bumrah. In the next ball, Bumrah gives a bit of width, on a back of length delivery, Stokes steered it through for a boundary.
Bumrah from around the stumps
Change of angle to Ben Stokes, this is a smart strategy. Bumrah comes from around the stumps to Stokes. Can open up chances for India.
Stats attack
Stokes vs Ashwin in Tests:
384 balls
150 runs
Seven dismissals
- No other bowler has dismissed Stokes as often
R Ashwin on the other end
It is off-spinner R Ashwin on the other end for India. This is a smart strategy as he would be looking to get Ben Stokes early, who is traditionally uncomfortable against spin bowling at start.
India vs England 1st Test Day 2 - LIVE!
Joe Root comes out to the middle and he has Ben Stokes along with him. The day starts with Jasprit Bumrah who picked a ball on the last ball of Day 1. Day 2 - HERE WE GO!
How will Ben Stokes fair today?
There is no doubt that Ben Stokes is one of the best batsmen in the world. But he has been away from cricket for a while - and if he suffers from ring rust, this could open the gateways for India to get an early wicket - and bring them back in the game early on.
India vs England 1st Test Day 2 - Pitch Report
Nick Knight and Deep Dasgupta: "Beautiful conditions, 30 degrees yesterday. The pitch played good for batsmen. Post Day 1, the rough areas are dusty and the soil is loose. This rough patch will be tricky for left-handed batsmen. The length is perfect for a left-armer. The ball lands there, that is very much in the gate. For the right-handed batsman it is still a good surface to bat on. Very important for India to pick early wickets. Very good batsman to bat on - could be tricky for left-handers."
England batting line-up
England have a lot of solid batsmen coming up to bat - with Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes. With pitch having nothing in for bowlers, this could be a tough day for India.
Joe Root on his century
Here's what Joe Root said after the day's play on Friday:
"It's (the leg) feeling alright, got a bit cramped there towards the end. I have to get some fluids in and I could do that overnight. Really pleased with the position we have got ourselves into, bit of a shame to lose Dom (Sibley) towards the end. We have to make use of a strong first day. I always felt it is going to play well. It is an unusual looking surface, but it certainly played really well. It is a bit on the slower side and I feel like it will spin as the game goes on, little bit of reverse swing as the day unfolded. It was a good contest and India have some good bowlers, made us work hard for our runs. It is a good first day but we know we have to back it up with something similar. I was just trying to get used to the surface. I wanted to take away the threat as much as possible and the more I got used to the surface, I found a little bit easier. The longer you stay out there the easier it becomes. I am a firm believer that your next hundred is your best hundred. It will mean a hell of a lot more if we can get a result from this game. To get a hundred in my 100th Test is special but I hope there is more to come tomorrow and it helps to put up a substantial first innings total. It was actually quite a nice day today, nice breeze throughout. I don't think I took enough fluids today. Got to make up for it, eat and rest well tonight."

The last time India picked three or fewer wickets in the opening day (full day's play) of a Test after bowling first was against Australia at SCG (348/2), Virat Kohli's maiden Test as full time skipper.

Saliva ban made it difficult: Bumrah
"The ball did become soft after a while and the wicket is on flatter side with the bounce being less. You are left with limited options (to shine ball). We are trying to figure out what we can do with the limited things in hand, at that time," Bumrah said at the virtual media conference.
"It becomes difficult when the ball becomes soft and doesn't shine really well because of new COVID-19 rules, we can't use saliva, very difficult during that time to maintain the ball," Bumrah said.
Laxman 'surprised' at India's tactics after tea
Speaking on Star Sports Network, Laxman said, “I was a little bit surprised that after Tea for almost 20-21 overs Ashwin did not bowl and that is something which you don't expect when you know Joe Root is their main batsman and you want to get his wicket as soon as possible.”
