Virat Kohli and Murali Vijay scored contrasting fifties to put India in control against Essex in their three-day warm-up match in Chelmsford on Wednesday.
Vijay, who is known as the ‘monk’ for his disciplined batting, took 110 deliveries to register his fifty while Kohli played his aggressive brand of cricket to reach the milestone in just 67 balls.
India were off to a rocky start with Shikhar Dhawan losing his wicket in the very first over of the match and Cheteshwar Pujara following suit in the second over. However, Vijay was unwavered by the fall of wickets as he continued to play sensibly. Along with Ajinkya Rahane, he steadied the innings and the indication of his resilliance comes from the fact that his first boundary came from the 14th over.
But, Rahane was dismissed for 17 and in came skipper Virat Kohli. The flamboyant batsman started his innings in trademark fashion and thanks to four boundaries, he was off to a flyer. Vijay continued to play the anchor role on the other side but the 34-year old was successful in hitting a couple of boundaries.
The boundaries continued to flow in Chelmsford as both batsmen played with absolute ease and Vijay finally got to his fifty with a boundary.Kohli was not far behind as he soon brought up his fifty in 67 balls and although Vijay was dismissed within the next three overs, Kohli continued to play aggressively before the Indian cricket team captain was dismissed by Paul Walter for 68.
