Bangladesh vs West Indies Commentary

10:23 AM IST The battle moves to Sylhet - That brings us to the end of an eventful first Test, one that had its fair share of rain, lightning and interruptions, but also delivered some absorbing cricket. West Indies ultimately proved to be the stronger side, continuing their impressive record against Bangladesh and taking a 1-0 lead in the series. They will now head to Sylhet with the opportunity to seal the series, just as they did on their previous tour in 2021, while Bangladesh will be desperate to bounce back and level things up. The second Test gets underway at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on November 5 at 3.30 AM GMT. Do join us well ahead of the start for all the build-up and latest updates. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
10:18 AM IST The victorious skipper of West Indies - Roston Chase says they arrived with a clear goal of winning both Tests and climbing to fifth or sixth in the rankings. Despite losing their first-innings lead, he praises the team's determination to fight back and turn the game around. He feels the partnerships in the first innings were important in keeping Bangladesh's total within reach, while the openers' positive start in the chase helped the visitors recover quickly from the early pressure and carry that momentum through to the finish. Chase is particularly pleased with his second-innings performance, having been challenged by his teammates to make a bigger impact after an underwhelming outing with the ball earlier in the match. He responded with a five-wicket haul, helping restrict Bangladesh to a manageable target. He also feels that while the pitch offered assistance to the bowlers, it remained a good surface for cricket.
10:16 AM IST PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Jomel Warrican wins the award for his excellent bowling effort, picking up 5/53 in the first innings and 4/63 in the second. Warrican says discipline and consistency were key to his success, while he also made good use of the pace and skid on the surface. He explains that the arm ball proved particularly effective and credits his work with Nikita Miller and Ravi Rampaul for helping him develop greater control. Warrican adds that he regularly checks the pitch marks to assess where his deliveries are landing, allowing him to repeat the same areas and maintain consistency. He describes the victory as a complete team effort, highlighting Joshua Bishop's two early wickets in the first innings after Bangladesh had gained the upper hand. He also praises Roston Chase for setting the tone with the ball in the second innings and going on to claim an impressive five-wicket haul.
10:14 AM IST The captain of Bangladesh - Najmul Hossain Shanto feels the team's preparation and intent were good heading into the game, with everyone keen to contribute, but admits it was simply a bad day for them. He says all three departments fell short, particularly the fielding, which made it difficult for them to stay in the contest. Shanto praises Shadman Islam's batting, especially his return to form, but believes the middle order failed to build the partnerships needed to post a bigger total. He feels the wicket was good for batting in the first innings and they should have made better use of those conditions. He also credits Nayeem Hasan for making an impressive comeback after a long absence, while acknowledging the efforts of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud and Taijul Islam with the ball. However, Shanto admits the batting let them down, with a poor start and too many soft dismissals costing the side. He says they need to assess those shortcomings and adapt better to the conditions, adding that when runs are hard to come by, taking chances in the field and producing exceptional efforts become even more important.
10:11 AM IST King shines in a clinical chase - Nayeem Hasan's maiden Test fifty gave Bangladesh a fighting chance, lifting the hosts to 142 and setting West Indies a target of 170. However, Roston Chase's five-wicket haul and Jomel Warrican's four-wicket effort had already put the visitors in control. The chase proved far more comfortable than expected as Brandon King and John Campbell added 112 for the opening wicket. Campbell fell just one short of his fifty, but King carried on, bringing up a fine half-century and remaining unbeaten on 81, his highest Test score. Kavem Hodge then provided the finishing touch with an aggressive 31 off just 27 balls, joining King in sealing a convincing eight-wicket win, with the latter striking the winning runs.
