Jae-Leigh Filander

Right Handed Wicket Keeper

Brimming with exuberance, sharp reflexes, and vocal leadership, Jae-Leigh Filander is the heartbeat of any team she represents. Born on September 16, 2007, she combines lightning-fast glovework behind the stumps with an enterprising, fearless approach to batting in the middle order. Whether she is driving team morale with her constant encouragement or dancing down the track to loft spinners over extra cover, she plays the game with vibrant joy and fierce competitiveness.

Her passion for the sport was sparked early through friendly backyard rivalry with her brother Jaydd, who pushed her to develop rapid hand-eye coordination. She started formal cricket through the KFC Mini-Cricket grassroots program, where her natural talent for wicketkeeping was quickly spotted. From those primary school pitches, she climbed rapidly through the Western Province youth structures, standing out as an exceptionally gifted glovewoman capable of standing up to seamers without hesitation.

Filander's reputation grew exponentially on the global stage when she was selected to represent South Africa at the 2025 ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup in Malaysia. Serving as the primary wicketkeeper, her agility behind the stumps was a highlight of the tournament, featuring multiple sharp stumpings and clean takes off both pace and spin. Her brave contributions with the bat down the order gave South Africa crucial momentum in tense tournament situations.

Building on her World Cup exploits, Filander spearheaded South Africa Under-19 campaigns in early 2026, including the Nigeria Invitational Women's T20 Tournament in March where she produced fluent knocks against regional opponents. Later in July 2026, she traveled with the national youth squad to Pakistan for a five-match youth T20 series, continuing to hone her wicketkeeping under subcontinental conditions and posting gritty scores under pressure.

Back home, Filander cemented her role in senior domestic cricket for Western Province Women in both the CSA Women Pro50 and Pro20 series. Despite being one of the youngest players in the squad, she handled senior fast bowlers with maturity, showing an ability to rotate strike and clear the boundary when the situation demanded. Her infectious energy and reliable glovework made her an indispensable member of the Cape Town-based outfit throughout late 2025 and early 2026.

The crowning moment of her young career arrived in September 2026, when Filander was called up to the senior national squad as an injury replacement for Sinalo Jafta. On September 19, 2026, she made her senior international T20I debut for South Africa against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Stepping onto the park for the Proteas Women at just nineteen years of age, she showed impeccable poise, keeping wicket cleanly and helping wrap up a comprehensive 5-0 series sweep.
