Though young cricket lovers have known Shastri as an energetic commentator with a booming voice, he was a more than capable all-rounder during his playing days.

A member of India’s 1983 World Cup winning squad, he represented the country in 80 Tests and 150 ODIs. Shastri reached the peak of his cricketing career during the 1985 Benson & Hedges World Championship in Australia.

In that tournament, he amassed 182 runs and claimed 8 wickets. He was the chief architect of India’s victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in the final, picking up a wicket and scoring an unbeaten 63.
