Chhath Puja: Avoid roads near Yamuna ghats to escape jams

Delhi traffic police have marked 34 ghats, ponds and canals to be avoided by motorists

Commuters have been advised to avoid roads near ghats and water bodies in the capital on Thursday evening and Friday morning because of Chhath Puja celebrations.

Several diversions have been planned for the two days when thousands of Delhi residents are expected to gather at its ghats to celebrate the festival.

The diversions will be effective from 3pm until 8pm on Thursday and again from 4am to 8am on Friday morning.

The traffic police have marked 34 ghats, ponds and canals to be avoided by motorists.

The east, north-east, north-west and outer areas of Delhi have most of these ghats.

Garima Bhatnagar, joint CP (traffic), said devotees are expected to be congregating at the ghats and other water bodies across the city from Thursday afternoon for offering prayers in the evening.

While many devotees return home after that, a few opt to stay back through the night.

The devotees return to the ghats early on Friday and offer prayers before dispersing.
