An eight-month-old girl suffered injuries to her private parts and underwent a surgery after she was sexually assaulted allegedly by her 28-year-old cousin at her house in northwest Delhi’s Shakur Basti area on Sunday, police said.

“Doctors have said her condition is critical,” said a senior police officer. The accused was arrested on Monday.

A case under relevant sections of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Indian Penal Code (IPC) were registered against him at the Netaji Subhash Place police station, said Aslam Khan, deputy commissioner of police (northwest).

A police officer associated with the probe said that on Sunday evening, the child’s mother returned home after work and found her daughter bleeding. The toddler’s father is a labourer while her mother works as a domestic help in nearby residential colonies. The couple lives with their two daughters on the first floor of their house while the ground floor is occupied by other family members.

On Sunday, the girl child’s parents left for work leaving their two daughters with other family members. In the evening, the two girls were with their aunt. The accused allegedly carried the toddler to another part of the building on the pretext of playing with her. The other girl remained with her aunt.

“He allegedly sexually assaulted the toddler. When the baby girl fell unconscious and started bleeding, he panicked and fled,” said the officer. Upon returning home, the mother of the girls found the baby unconscious in blood. She raised an alarm and informed her husband and other family members.

The injured child was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The hospital authorities informed the local police. During the probe, the role of the cousin came under scanner because he was last seen with the child and was missing since the matter came to fore. His location was traced and he was caught the next morning.

“We interrogated the cousin. He has confessed to the crime. The accused is unmarried,” the officer said.
