A waste-free village

In addition to the treatment plant, the village has been equipped with a water treatment plant, which is also a zero liquid waster discharge plant. These plants will be inaugurated on Saturday.

The Games village has come up on the Yamuna river banks. Various NGOs had expressed fears that waste generated from the 1,168 odd flats in the Games complex would discharge waste into the already polluted river.

The Yamuna accounts for almost 70 per cent of Delhi’s water supply. According to Centre for Science and Environment, sewage and waste from 22 drains in Delhi flow into the Yamuna.

“No waste will be discharged into the Yamuna. Both the plants will help in making the carbon footprint of the Games village smaller. The plants are technology demonstrators,” said Sanjam Cheema, spokesperson, Delhi Jal Board (DJB).

The village is set to become the only mini township in the country to have a dual pipeline network with fully recycled wastewater.

The water treatment plant has been constructed at a cost of Rs 35.20 crore and uses techniques like cascade aeration, UV disinfection and re-carbonisation to purify ground water.
