Congress has fielded former chief minister Harish Rawat’s daughter Anupama from the Haridwar rural seat against BJP’s seer-turned-politician Swami Yatishwaranand. Harish Rawat has been active in the Haridwar rural region for the past five years despite his defeat at the hands of Yatishwaranand, who got elevated to cabinet rank last year. In 2017, Mukaram Ansari had contested against Harish Rawat and Swami Yatishwaranand from the seat on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket in Haridwar rural, bagging 18,383 votes, which proved decisive as Rawat lost by a margin of 12,278 votes. The former chief minister has aggressively campaigned for his daughter this year. Anupama has also been very active in the past two years, chairing key party meetings, attending political, social and local events as well as attending wedding family functions of prominent villagers.
