Pritam Singh, the leader of opposition and a sitting MLA, has won all assembly elections from Chakrata seat in Dehradun district. This year, he is pitted against BJP’s RS Nautiyal, the father of noted playback singer Jubin Nautiyal. Pritam holds a strong influence in the area from where he was elected as an MLA for the first time in 1993 in the then undivided Uttar Pradesh. He is one of the senior-most leaders of the Congress in the state. He has been the president of Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee, and also served as a cabinet minister for home, rural development, food and civil supplies, panchayati raj and minor irrigation during the Congress regimes in the state (2002-2007 and 2012-2017).
