A two-time MLA from Khatima, the primary challenge before the youngest chief minister of Uttarakhand was to prove that his influence is not limited to just his home turf in Kumaon. This reflected a lot in his campaign trail as he tried to reach out to voters in Garhwal as well where he campaigned in over 40 constituencies. However, his supporters and wife campaigned for him in his home turf. Dhami is seeking a re-election against his arch rival Bhuwan Kapri of the Congress, who had lost the 2017 polls. In the last four assembly elections, Congress won Khatima twice in the first two polls. Dhami contested in 2012 for the first time and defeated Devendra Chand of Congress by a margin of 5,394.
