Keith Sequeira wears many hats – model, VJ and actor. He’s currently seen on Love ka Hai Intezaar as prince Madhav Singh, and is known for being on Bigg Boss 9. A sports enthusiast since his school days, Keith says he knows the importance of being fit . Here, he talks about his workout regime, how he fights with his sugar cravings, and shares advice for newbie gym-goers.
What’s your fitness regime like?
Earlier, I was an absolute gym guy, but now I love variety. I work out four to five days a week, with a mix of functional training, cardio, weights, a good run at times, or some cycling. I make sure that the intensity of my workout is high, even if it’s just for 30 minutes at times. The higher the intensity, the more difference it makes to the body. It also helps in increasing metabolism, oxygen and blood flow through the body.
Do you follow a strict diet?
Breakfast is usually oats with fruits. Otherwise, a smoothie made of frozen berries. Lunch is two rotis with any green vegetable and some Greek yogurt (which I love!). I eat a lot of green veggies, sometimes just a bowl of vegetable too. I usually snack on some digestive biscuits to feel good, along with some green tea. Dinner is usually sweet potato, some salad and boiled chicken. Anything light that’s easy to digest before I sleep.
On your cheat days, what do you binge on?
My cheat days are usually on Sunday. I love indulging in a bit of tiramisu, cheesecakes or chocolates. And only if I am out with friends do I indulge in a burger or pizza occasionally. Otherwise, I completely avoid oily, spicy and fried food.
Actors often travel. How do you keep your fitness schedule on track while travelling?
When travelling, keeping one’s diet in check is more important. So I make it a point to eat healthy and nutritious food wherever I go. Besides that, keeping active and fit is the main goal here, so be it a run, jog or swim, I make it a point to keep my body active.
As a child, you were into sports. Do you still find the time to play any sport?
When I was younger, I would play a lot of football, cricket and I was into gymnastics too. I was part of nearly every sport team back in school. Now due to time constraints, I don’t really indulge in these games, but love venturing outdoors on a good hike or trek.
Who’s your fitness inspiration?
Brad Pitt and Akshay Kumar are my role models when it comes to fitness. They have always maintained themselves so well. And somehow, they just know how to balance the structure of their body at all times.
How important is it to have a trainer or coach who guides you on your work out?
It isn’t very necessary in general, but if you are someone who needs motivation to get onto the right track in regard with your fitness regime, then someone who can guide you well is what you definitely need.
What are some of the common mistakes you’ve seen people in gyms making?
I have seen people getting into hardcore workouts without warming up the body, which is absolutely wrong. This does result in injuries. According to me, a 15 minute warm up, 30 minute high-intensity workout and then 15 minutes of stretches is a good way to go! An overall one hour workout is what you should aim for. Again, it is about the intensity of the workout. So, your heart rate should be high.
