“IIT staffers and students found the body hanging... Doctors at the institute’s hospital declared the student dead. Preliminary findings indicate that he died by suicide. A probe is on,” a police officer said, requesting anonymity. “The body will be handed to the student’s parents, who live in North 24 Parganas district [West Bengal], after the post-mortem examination.”
IIT Kharagpur director Suman Chakraborty told news agency PTI that the student’s friends and faculty members could not gauge any stress or anxiety in him. “But we need to enable students suffering from anxiety and extreme stress to open up and do everything needed to prevent such incidents.”
On April 18, a 21-year-old mechanical engineering student died after falling from the eighth floor of another hostel.
