Ahmedabad plane crash: 241 killed on board flight, only one survivor

Ahmedabad plane crash news: Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel has reached Ahmedabad's Asarwa Civil Hospital, where the plane crash injured have been brought, to assess the situation. 

An Air India flight carryng 242 passengers crashed near Ahmedabad airport, five minutes after it took off. Among the passengers, 169 were Indian, 53 British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian. 

Air India has blacked out its social media accounts after the crash of a London bound plane carrying 242 passengers. Instagram and X handles of Air India and Air India Express have used black and black-and-white images as the airline mourns the crash.

Air India plane crash LIVE: Congress MP and Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi has reacted to the Ahmedabad place crash, urging Congress workers to aid rescue and relief operations.

“The Ahmedabad Air India crash is heartbreaking. The pain and anxiety the families of the passengers and crew must be feeling is unimaginable. My thoughts are with each one of them in this incredibly difficult moment. Urgent rescue and relief efforts by the administration are critical - every life matters, every second counts. Congress workers must do everything they can to help on the ground,” the leader said on X. 

As per sources, at least 120 people have been killed after the horrific Air India plane crash on Thursday. 

A London-bound Air India flight carrying 242 passengers crashed five minutes after take off near the Ahmedabad airport. As per aviation officials, the pilots issued a MAYDAY call to the Ahmedabad ATC moments before the crash.  

Ahmedabad plane crash news: A part of the Air India plane that crashed within minutes of takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport landed atop a building, show visuals. A video shared by PTI shows a huge crowd gathered near the crash site as part of the crashed plane with a wheel attached sits atop a building. The building is the intern doctors' hostel at BJ Medical College, according to sources.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi taken stock of the crash. In his first official statement since the accident, the prime minister has said the crash has left him “stunned and saddened." 

“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected,” said Modi. 

Ahmedabad plane crash news: Following the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, the authorities at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport have temporarily suspended operations until further notice.

"Flight Al 171 from Ahmedabad to London, Gatwick, earlier today, was involved in a crash shortly after takeoff, outside the airport. As a result, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice," reads the official statement issued.

"Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport. We request your cooperation and patience as authorities manage this evolving situation," airport authorities added further.

UK prime minister Keir Starmer has been informed of the Ahmedabad plane crash on Thursday. As per data from Air India, 53 passengers on board the flight were British nationals heading to London. 

“The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating. I am being kept updated as the situation develops, and my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time,” said UK PM Keir Starmer

“In light of the AI171 crash, an Operational Control Room has been activated at the Ministry of Civil Aviation to coordinate all details,” stated the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Union home minister Amit Shah has taken stock of the Air India crash. As per sources, the BJP leader is rushing for Ahmedabad to take note of the situation. 

“Pained beyond words by the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. Disaster response forces have been quickly rushed to the crash site. Spoke with the Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel, Home Minister Shri Harsh Sanghavi, and Commissioner of Police Ahmedabad to assess the situation,” Shah wrote on X.

“Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals. The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals,” reads the official statement issued by the airline.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed her condolences after an Air India plane carrying 242 people crashed near Ahmedabad airport.  

“Stunned and profoundly shocked to know of the most tragic Air India plane crash at Ahmedabad today. It is a most sad news for all of us, even while we anxiously wait for survivors details and pray for survival of all. The crash during take- off of the London- bound plane has shaken and saddened me at my core. While we do not know exact figures, media reports indicate that there were 242 passengers in the plane. I am praying to God at this moment,” she wrote on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dialed Union Minister of Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu after an Air India plane crashed in Ahmedabad. 

The civil aviation minister is rushing to Ahmedabad to “oversee rescue and relief operations on the ground. The Prime Minister has directed the Minister to ensure all necessary support is extended immediately and asked to be kept regularly updated on the situation.  All relevant agencies are on high alert, and coordinated efforts are underway,” said the official statement issued by office of HMCA
