‘Assam not a foreign country where…’: Owaisi on govt's move for Madrasa teachers
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that all teachers who have come from outside the state to teach in Madrasas may be asked to appear "from time to time" in the nearest police station.
All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday criticised the Assam government's move to tighten scrutiny of Madrasa teachers hailing from other states.
“Assam is not a foreign country where Indians have to ask for your permission. Right to occupation, move & settle in any part of India is a fundamental right,” Owaisi said in a tweet.
“What about teachers in RSS-run schools? What if other states start putting the same requirement on people from Assam?” he asked.
On Sunday, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that all teachers who have come from outside the state to teach in Madrasas may be asked to appear "from time to time" in the nearest police station. The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of Madrasas in the state following the alleged involvement of Islamic clerics in 'jihadi' activities.
Sarma said Assam police is working with Muslims in the state to “rationalise” Madrasa education, adding that a checklist has been prepared for Madrasas, though the state is yet to "enter into an agreement with stakeholders but things are moving in the right direction."

He also said police are coordinating with Bengali Muslims who have positive attitude towards education to create "a good environment" in Madrasas.
"The police under the directive of Director General of Police B J Mahanta are working with the Muslim community to rationalise Madrasa education. They should not be considered them as enemies, instead we want them as stakeholders," he said.
